Are you a confident payroll professional ready to take full ownership of complex payroll operations? We’re looking for a Payroll Specialist who can lead the end-to-end payroll cycle, manage specialised payroll tasks, and bring a strategic mindset to compliance, risk, and audit readiness.

You’ll be trusted to work independently, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to the integrity and performance of our payroll function. You will also play a key role in supporting the Senior Payroll Manager and working collaboratively with the team to uphold compliance and reduce risk and to enable this, the role is expected to be based in the office five days a week to ensure strong collaboration with the team and key stakeholders.

In this role you will bring a strategic lens to payroll — not just process transactions, working alongside senior payroll professionals focused on risk and compliance and you will be trusted to manage specialised and sensitive payroll tasks with discretion. This is a team environment that’s evolving and needs strong, steady contributors to help shape it

Where you will make an impact

  • Handling specialised payroll tasks, including Shadow Payrolls
  • Ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with NZ legislation and internal policies
  • Identifying and resolving payroll discrepancies and exceptions
  • Supporting audits, reconciliations, and reporting
  • Providing clear, professional support to employees and managers

About You

  • Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll in a complex environment
  • Strong understanding of NZ payroll legislation
  • Confidence working independently and making sound decisions
  • High attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving
  • Strategic thinking — you understand payroll’s role in compliance, risk, and business continuity
  • Solid intermediate to advanced Excel skills — including formulas, macros and pivot tables
  • Professional communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally

Extra Reasons to Belong

  • Opportunities to contribute to compliance, risk management, and system improvements
  • A workplace that values accuracy, accountability, and continuous learning
  • Opportunities to contribute to cross-functional projects and continuous improvement
  • Fully subsidised Southern Cross health insurance to our eligible permanent NZ employees and a discount on insurance cover for eligible family members.
  • Wellbeing discounts and advice, EAP counselling services, study support, and cultural leave.
  • Paid parental leave - in addition to standard parental leave, Bupa offers 12 weeks of paid leave for primary carers and 2 weeks for secondary carers
  • Professional Development – in-house and external training and development.
